How To Engage Your Employees While Working Remotely

The pandemic has made many companies shift the majority of their positions to work-from-home options. While technology might have made this easy, some team leaders are finding that it isn’t necessarily easy to keep their team members engaged and focused. Finding ways to do this doesn’t have to be difficult. Consider these options.

Communicate, But Don’t Micromanage

Zoom calls and other communication options are a great way to stay in touch with your team members. Use these to keep everyone informed about what’s going on with the company and anything they’ll need to do their tasks. Resist the temptation to try to micromanage how they’re working from home. Having a boss who tries to micromanage remote employees introduces more stress to an already stressful situation. These employees are probably dealing with challenges, such as a barking dog or other people in the home, that they don’t have to worry about at the office.

Plan Virtual Activities for Socialization

Colleagues sometimes get together after work. They might not be able to head to a local restaurant for dinner, but you can schedule a virtual happy hour or similar event that gives them time to socialize so they feel like they’re a cohesive team once again. A virtual pet introduction day or a time when employees can show off their remote work setups might also be beneficial.

Set Up Encouraging Feedback Sessions

Feedback sessions are a chance for you to find out what’s really going on with your employees. You can give them encouragement and ask for feedback during these sessions. Group sessions will work for some companies, but you should let everyone know that you’re also open to individual sessions. As you’re talking to them, take note of any special challenges they’re having that you can help with.

Hold Virtual Contests

Find something you want the team to focus on and set up a contest based on that. Because working from home can be a stressful experience, you might use things like a half-day off with pay as the prize for the person who wins the contest. Try to make these fun for the employees to give them something to look forward to when they log in for work.
