3 Tips For Getting Your Office Organized In The New Year

January 21, 2019 Staples Business Advantage

What better way to start off the new year than with a clean office and an organized workspace? A clean office and desk reduces stress, helps increase productivity, facilitates creativity, saves time and looks more professional. Consider National Clean Off Your Desk Day, held the second Monday in January, to help get your office in order.

Create a Command Centre

Hang a bulletin board in a central location in the office for posting notices, important numbers, schedules, goals, and other office correspondence. The board increases communication with employees, reduces paper clutter on desks and provides a convenient place to hold a calendar. Bulletin boards come in a variety of designs, from solid wood or metal frames, and some include a whiteboard for jotting down last-minute notes.

Take Advantage of Vertical Space

Small offices often look cramped and cluttered regardless of how often you clean. Make your office look cleaner and easier to navigate by taking advantage of vertical space. Nail clipboards to the wall to hold files and folders. Attach hanging file organizers along the wall to hold mail and use floating shelves with containers to store less used items off your desk. Baskets also hide clutter from small objects like office supplies, which makes the space look cleaner. Be sure to label your storage containers to make it easier to locate items you need in a hurry.

Organizing Your Desk

When organizing your desk, perform the reach test. Start by purging all of last year's clutter by removing everything from your desk except the items you use daily. Place your monitor directly in front of you at arm’s length. The top line of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level and positioned in a way that you can clearly read the screen without bending your head, neck or chest forward. Place other necessities within reach so you don’t have to constantly get up during the day to reach items you need. Add a supply cabinet to store and organize extra office machines and supplies.

A clean and organized office makes it easier to focus on the task at hand. By following a few tips and tricks, you can eliminate clutter and make your office a safe and efficient space.
